It's not as accessible for the uninitiated as riding Epona in Twilight Princess, for example. If you haven't, though, you'll probably find it to be awkward. If you've ever ridden a real horse before, it should feel natural to you - it's a good approximation. Whipping both forward at the same time increases the horse's speed, and pulling back on both slows it down. The Nunchuk is the left, so it turns the horse left. The Remote is your right reign, so twisting it turns your horse to the right. The control scheme is unique when you're riding a horse, as it attempts a simulation of holding an actual set of reigns by using the Wii Remote and Nunchuk. Here, story-driven missions keep the action moving. Sure, fans of this kind of game probably want to brush, feed and pet their horses - but if that's all a game has, things get boring quick. It's a nice mix of different things to do, and helps Petz Horse Club feel more varied than some other horse-focused virtual pet designs in the past. Lily is the name of our heroine here, a girl whose natural abilities of animal empathy have made her a valuable asset at the Wildmountain Reserve, a protected park populated with wild mustangs. And it's an early indicator that this title's going to be home to a few more pleasant surprises. Petz Horse Club gets things started quickly, just like that, by not even offering any preamble past the title screen - you just find yourself flung into the middle of that tutorial race, charging forward toward the finish line. Within thirty seconds, you've got it down - and you've finished your first race.

There is a charm about the game, though - it feels reminiscent of the feel-good Saturday morning cartoons of the 90s. The visuals, animations, and mechanics are lacking - to say the least. There are some saving graces to Petz: Horsez 2 from being a god-awful game. As an adult looking for a decent video game - Petz: Horsez 2 is a hard pill to swallow. Again, as long as you can play around with horses - not much else matters. Even more, so that they feel really awkward. There are mini-games to enjoy but seem a bit redundant with no reason to actually do them.
It's unbelievably clunky to control, but it gets the job done for the target market. Players will be racing, maintaining, and raising their horses to save your ranch from evil-doers. Inside that storyline, you'll assume the role of a horserider named Lily. The narrative is quite rich, touching on every horse fanatical dream of championing the local equestrian populace. So what are the redeeming features for the kids? As an adult, you'll spend time moaning about controlling your characters, the choppy animations, and uninspired backdrops. Honestly, that drag and grumble sort of sets the tone for the entire game. Even naming your horse, in the beginning, requires monumental effort to sift through the letters to complete your name. The first universal complaint, regardless of age, is the control schematic. Does Petz: Horsez 2 allow kids to fulfill their dreams through a playable medium? They are here to play with the pretty horses and fantasize about running a stable. They would be less inclined to complain about a gameplay experience. Straight from the Horses Mouthīefore we begin shredding this game to pieces, one must remember that the target market is young children. Once again - expectations are low, but it's interesting to see how this plays out. The whole aura as an adult behind this concept is intriguing, to say the least.
There must be enough demand following the first release - or at least enough of a market - to carry on with this mysterious horse simulator. You get the feeling that this might set the expectations for Petz: Horsez 2 - or the lack of them.įrom another perspective - this is the second addition to the franchise. It's made worse by the idea that you're not sure whether this ironic, trying to be cute, or just plain incompetent. There's always a little bit of concern when you're about to play a game that can't spell its title correctly.
